Drills that are designed to ensure personnel are proficient in their assigned security duties, and which ensure elements of the ship security plan are tested, are required to be conducted as per the ISPS Code.

The ISPS Code drills encourage a common sense approach to security that encourages vigilance and an understanding of basic procedures that counter any terrorist or other threat to the ships security.

The Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO) should be trained and certificated on a course approved by the flag state and crew with designated responsibilities must complete ship security awareness course
